The pair you reach for

Open your sock drawer and you'll find two categories. There's the pile you actually wear, and there's everything else — the ones that slide down, bunch at the toe, or leave a mark round the calf by lunchtime.

Most people own far more socks than they wear. The good ones get washed and worn again within the week; the rest sit there being technically clean.

Nobody plans that. Each pair looked fine when it was bought.

Why socks are hard to buy

Because almost nothing that determines whether you'll wear them is visible before you do.

Cuff tension is the main culprit. Too loose and it slides; too tight and it digs in and leaves a ring. That's a function of the elastic content and how it's knitted, and you cannot assess it by looking at a photograph or squeezing a packet.

The heel is the second one. A sock knitted with a proper heel pocket sits where your heel is. One knitted as a straight tube doesn't, and it slowly rotates through the day until the seam is somewhere it shouldn't be.

The toe seam is the third. A flat or hand-linked toe is barely noticeable. A bulky one is fine for an hour and irritating for eight.

None of that shows up in a product listing. All of it shows up on day one of wearing them.

What we look for

Elastic content and cuff construction. How much stretch, where it sits, whether it holds without gripping. This is the difference between a sock you forget about and one you're aware of all day.

A shaped heel, not a tube. More expensive to knit and immediately obvious once you're wearing it.

A flat toe seam. Small detail, disproportionate effect over a long day.

Yarn that survives washing. Socks get laundered more than anything else you own. Cheap yarn pills, thins at the ball of the foot and loses its shape within a few months — and it's predictable from the fibre blend if anyone bothers to check.

Cushioning matched to use. A sock built for work boots isn't the same as one for running shoes or a desk. We say which is which rather than calling everything all-purpose.

Plenty doesn't clear that list. That's why the range stays small enough that we can tell you something useful about any pair in it.

What we don't claim

Our socks aren't medical devices. They're not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent anything. Where a product offers graduated compression, we say what the compression level is and leave the clinical judgement to people qualified to make it. If you have a circulatory condition or diabetes, speak to a healthcare professional before choosing compression wear.

What we sell is well-made socks for people who are on their feet. That's a real thing and it doesn't need dressing up as something clinical.

What we don't do

Chase trends. Socks aren't a category where that ends well.

Inflate to discount. The price is the price. It doesn't go up in October so it can come down in November.

Overclaim. A pair of socks won't change your life. What good socks do is quieter — you stop noticing your feet. No adjusting, no pulling them up on the stairs, no relief at taking them off.

That's the whole ambition, and it's a surprisingly high bar.

The problem with buying socks online

You can't try them on. And unlike most things, you can't send them back once you have — they're a hygiene product, and no retailer can return an opened pack to stock.

Which leaves you guessing on size, and stuck if you guess wrong.

So we took the guessing out. With our 60-Day Fit Guarantee, you can wear them and wash them. If the fit still isn't right within 60 days, email us your order number and the size you need — we send a replacement size free of charge and you keep the original pair. Nothing to return, no postage to pay, no photographs required.

It's the only sensible way to sell socks online, and we're surprised it isn't standard.

Ask us first
